Motivational Maps Supports One-on-One Career Laddering and Development

A 15-minute self-assessment test enables individuals to identify not only their levels of engagement, but also their key personal motivators.

Motivational Maps is an employee self-assessment platform developed in the United Kingdom and used in 14 countries to help individuals and their organizations better understand their underlying motivators to create a more productive and mutually beneficial work environment and career path.

According to Akeela Davis, principal of Courageous Business Culture Inc., a Vancouver-based consulting firm that also accredits Motivational Maps Practitioners, the 15-minute online assessment, based in part on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Enneagrams, enables people to identify their underlying motivational drivers to precisely identify the conditions under which they can achieve the greatest success for themselves and the organization. Davis believes the platform is unique in that it’s designed to provide the “why” behind each individual and the organization. Thus, she says, it creates a potential roadmap for greater satisfaction (and therefore engagement) by identifying unconscious motivators and conflicts.

“We measure how people feel about what they’re doing or their goals,” she says. “Our assessment may be repeated often because as people’s age, circumstances, or prospects change, motivation varies. A single assessment will give a snapshot and insights on the current circumstances but has no bearing on motivation five or 10 years later, unlike psychometric assessments. The key to Motivation Maps is the self-knowledge it imparts to a person, a team, or an organization.

“Human beings are complex individuals,” Davis continues. “That complexity is multiplied exponentially, as individuals become larger collectives. Emotions and short-term behaviors may be faked to create certain impressions. The key is the knowledge that motivations cannot be created. They are detected and then they may be influenced.”

After completing the assessment, participants receive a report with recommendations, along with a one-on-one call with the consultant for an in-depth discuss of the findings.

Other Motivational Maps principles, according to Davis, are:
There are no good or bad motivators
There is no judgement of the results
Motivation changes as our feelings about our circumstances change
All nine motivators are part of our motivational profile
The relationship, achievement and growth results provide important information on culture and interactions that can cause issues with colleagues.

Motivational Maps is currently only available through accredited practitioners. As the only Senior Practitioner on the North American continent, Davis’ company trains, licenses and accredits practitioners. The license includes the technology, as well as various levels of training, certification and support to help consultants utilize the platform to advise clients and their employees. Based on her experience and client feedback, Davis feels that Motivational Maps can be of use to multiple specialists in the engagement space.
