From Booklist

Klososky, technology innovation expert, explains his velocity manifesto, which means that a business leader cannot ignore the impact of technology on the organization’s current operations, its future operations, and the organization’s culture. He offers three key areas in which to accomplish specific leadership skills, first to build what he labels Digital Plumbing, or efficient and productive technology infrastructure for growth. Then leaders must adopt a High Beam Strategy to set an accurate vision and future direction for the organization and finally create a High-Velocity Culture in which a highly productive workforce is developed, integrating different types of skills and lifestyles. The author observes that leaders may understand the velocity manifesto, but some who were successful even 10 years ago find themselves struggling with ever-changing technology demands. Leaders in conservative industries (e.g., banking, accounting, law) could also be challenged, but not necessarily. Our fast-paced technology revolution requires important management perspective, vocabulary skills, concepts, and processes, all of which Klososky describes. This is an excellent book for current business leaders and those aspiring to executive status. --Mary Whaley

Throughout his career, Scott Klososky has stood on the nexus between technology and humanity. He has worked to define and help organizations discover the ideal blend of technology and human effort. It is this experience that drove him to write his fourth book, Did God Create the Internet? The Impact of Technology on Humanity. Klososky is widely recognized for his ability to forecast how technology will impact organizations, industries, and our world.

A former CEO of three successful tech startup companies and principal at consulting firm Future Point of View, Scott specializes in seeing beyond the horizon of how technology is changing the world.

His unique perspectives on technology, business culture, and the future allow him to travel the globe as an international speaker, consultant, and author, publishing four titles to date and working with senior execs in organizations ranging from the Fortune 500 to universities, nonprofits, and countless professional associations and coalitions. As a technology entrepreneur, he also continually works in the trenches of building his own companies.   Clients he has worked with are American Fidelity Assurance Company, Roche, IBM, General Motors, Georgia Pacific, Legrand, International Franchise Association, and Great Clips.

Scott began his career fresh out of high school, where his job as a delivery boy was a springboard into the world of technology. He became division head of a computer sales division and then purchased it as his own company. It was eventually built into a twelve-store operation in three states.

His next endeavor was as founder and CEO of Paragraph, Inc., a Soviet/American joint venture founded in 1988, despite international tensions. Half of the company was sold to Silicon Graphics, and the other half is still expanding today (Parascript, Inc.).

Scott then collaborated with H.R. Haldeman to publish a diary of his years as an aide to President Nixon, which was a bestseller (Putnam Publishing), and involved Sony Interactive in the release of a book companion CD-ROM.

The evolving Internet ushered in a world of opportunity for inspiring pioneers, and Scott was not left behind. He was founder and CEO of webcasts.com, an early producer of webcasted media ranging from corporate and government communications to sporting events and entertainment. He sold webcasts.com in 1999 for $115 million. His expertise in leadership and his creative approach to business direction inspired Critical Technologies to hire him as a turnaround CEO, where he completely rebuilt the underlying products and brought the company to profitability.

The real value in reading The Velocity Manifesto is that it's an IT how-to book written by a CEO for CEOs and those leading organizations. Klososky, not being an IT person by trade, has cracked the code on how organizational leaders can engage, challenge, and integrate their IT functions into their organization.

In an age where accelerating changes in information technology assail organizations at a blistering pace, Velocity is both timely and relevant. Klososky does a masterful job mapping out three simple concepts, which correspond to the book's major sections:
    1) Renovating Your Digital Plumbing
    2) The High-beam Strategy
    3) Creating a Culture of Velocity
Klososky contends that in following these concepts, organizations can successfully navigate the pace of IT change and stay competitive in the future.

Not only does Klososky provide a simple and well thought out approach to leadership/IT integration, he has the pedigree and credentials to be believed that what he proposes is doable. Klososky has been a CEO of several successful companies to include Paragraph and Webcasts, and currently serves on the board of Alkami. As a consultant, Klososky provides consulting services for Cisco, Lockheed Martin, Ebay, The Hartford Financial Services Group, Marriott, etc.

Some valuable pearls found in Velocity, range from understanding the importance of an organization efficiently structuring, mapping, and routing their data (digit plumbing), to the critical nature of trendspotting, and the importance of determining when, and when not to be the pioneer of a new trend. One truly insightful, yet challenging, tool Klososky proposes is, "the Four Questions That Can Shape Your Vision Precision." However, the most valuable aspect of Velocity is its third section, Creating a Culture of Velocity. Section three illustrates the importance of establishing a culture which can handle, manage, sustain, and take advantage of the rapid pace of IT change.

The only downside to Velocity is the frequent icons placed throughout the book prompting the reader to access the book's website. The website was no more than a marketing tool promoting Klososky's consulting and speaking services. The tools associated to the book were small excerpts from each chapter. When accessing the website, readers may feel Klososky's motive for writing Velocity was strictly promotional.

In the final analysis, Velocity is a must read for every CEO and leaders in all organizations. After all is said and done, Velocity is not really a book about IT, it's about leadership. Velocity shows leaders how they can better leverage and maximize an extremely valuable organization tool in order to better achieve their organization's mission, establish a competitive advantage, and ensure they stay competitive in the future. If your organization touches, uses, processes, and/or relies on data, reading Velocity is time well spent!

Technological innovations are faster, product development cycles are shorter, and expectations for everything are higher; in short the velocity of business, driven by technological change, is increasing exponentially, according to Scott Klososky in this book. Increased velocity demands leadership skills that are very different from the ones that were effective twenty years ago.

Part One of the book is about "renovating your digital plumbing". Most business leaders recognise the importance of information technology to their success, but admit that their organisation's IT resources are far from optimal. It is critical that you get your IT right by fixing the leaks in your digital plumbing if you are to have any chance of keeping up with the pace of change.

Part Two is about "high beam strategy". Many businesses are driving with their headlights off - and doomed to crash - or with their headlights on low-beam, focusing only on the immediate future, so that they can only travel at low speed. Businesses which travel at high speed need to have their headlights on high beam, anticipating the trends which will happen over the next five years or more.

Part Three is about "creating a culture of velocity". There is a big difference in productivity between a good programmer and an average programmer, and good IT people need to be treated like the creative artists that they are. IT-dependent businesses need to cultivate organisational cultures which are attractive to the millennial generation and take advantage of social technologies.

In my view this book does an excellent job of identifying the problems faced by current IT-dependent organisations and suggesting solutions. Business leaders cannot get the best results by simply leaving the IT strategy to the IT department; they have to take the time to understand the technology and work out how they can use the technology to drive better business results.

I would not have chosen the expression "digital plumbing" as a metaphor for IT infrastructure, because it suggests something that is necessary but does not make a great contribution to success. In fact, for knowledge-based organisations the IT infrastructure is often the most significant contributor to profitability. This easy-to-read book is worthy of the attention of any business leader.

This book is a well written challenge for all those in leadership to set, communicate and execute on your vision. Stop waiting and get in the game or the game will pass you and your entire organization by in the blink of an eye.
