Purpose Pledge Launches to Turn "Purpose" into Measurable Business Practice
A coalition led by Dr. Bronner’s, Lift Economy, and One Step Closer has launched the Purpose Pledge, a new nonprofit initiative designed to operationalize purpose through measurable commitments, third-party validation, and transparent reporting—following concerns that existing certification frameworks lack sufficient rigor and accountability.Click here to subscribe to the ESM weekly e-newsletter.
A new initiative aimed at bringing discipline and credibility to purpose-driven business has officially launched with the rollout of the Purpose Pledge, spearheaded by Dr. Bronner’s in partnership with Lift Economy and One Step Closer, two other sustainability-oriented organizations. Les Szabo, Chief Strategy and Impact Officer of Dr. Bronner’s, serves as Executive Director
According to reporting by Heather Clancy writing in Trellis, the initiative was initially tested in 2025 following Dr. Bronner’s decision to step away from the Certified B Corp framework. That decision, according to the company’s own statement, stemmed from concerns that certification standards had been diluted and were increasingly being used for marketing purposes without sufficient operational accountability. The company also cited what it viewed as weak standards and the risk of “greenwashing” as larger multinationals gained certification without rigorous supply chain verification.
In response, the Purpose Pledge was created to emphasize not just commitments, but how those commitments are embedded into business operations. As reported, the program requires participating organizations to adopt 10 core principles—including living wages, environmental stewardship, ethical supply chains, and philanthropy—and to publish multi-year roadmaps with transparent disclosure and third-party validation of progress.
“The operationalization of purpose is really what all of this comes down to,” says Szabo of Dr. Bronner’s, underscoring the shift from intention to execution. Now structured as a nonprofit with a growing cohort of participating companies, the Purpose Pledge reflects a broader recognition that purpose must be measurable, verifiable, and systematically managed—moving beyond labels to demonstrable impact.
