Early Snapshot of Newly Remote Workers Finds Mix of Anxiety, Thankfulness, Happiness, and Determination

The Appreciation at Work organization sent a survey to 1,250 at-home workers at the end of March to get an early feel for the impact of remote working on employees in the age of Covid-19. The findings are based on 85 responses, 88% from women, and 12% from men.
 
A survey by the culture training company Appreciation at Work, Wichita, KS, provides an early snapshot about how newly remote workers are feeling: above-average anxiety, thankful (presumably because they have jobs), determined, and at least moderately productive. The survey finds little sign of general hopelessness or loneliness among the respondents during the first weeks of working at home.
 
The study author, Dr. Paul White, President of Appreciation at Work, notes the generally positive tone of responses despite the crisis and finds that employees generally appear to enjoy not having to commute. He adds that these responses differ greatly from surveys of the general population, many of whom are out of work.
 
As expected, respondents report moderate amounts of anxiety ranging from moderate (34%), quite a bit (28%) to extreme (5%). However, anxiety is primarily focused on the impact of the pandemic on others (both globally and loved ones) rather than on themselves. Here are the percentages of respondents who reported a considerable or great degree of anxiety over the following: Impact of the coronavirus on the  world, 55%; the overall economy, 42%, health of a family member, 35%, ability to buy what is needed, 23%; personal future financial status, 19%, and personal health, 14%. 
 
Presumably because they have retained their jobs, 97% of the employees described themselves as thankful: (Extremely, 35%; Quite a bit, 35%; Moderate, 27%). Eighty-five percent (85%) report being Extremely (2%), Quite a bit (30%) or Moderately (53%) happy.  81% of respondents indicate they are responding to difficult circumstances with determination: (Extremely, 11%; Quite a bit, 34%; Moderate, 36%). Dr. White suggests this is good news for employers. Likewise, 70% report no feelings of hopelessness, and 27%, a little.) Of the respondents, 6% say they extremely productive; 36% quite a bit, and 41%, moderately.)

 
Dr. White writes that he anticipated loneliness to increase, but right now the level is 22%; not at all; and 54%, a little. 
 
According to the study, activities related to regular exercise, sleep, healthy eating and breaks were in the moderate range, except for binge-watching of the news, which is above average.
