If anyone has defied the notion that culture and learning are warm and fuzzies, it’s Ridge, whose 25-year career as CEO of the company produced spectacular growth in terms of sales, profits, and share price returns. Interestingly, it took several years of his leadership before the stock took off. His management style focuses specifically on creating a culture based on the principles of a tribe, honoring the role of its members, focusing on continuous learning, and supporting mistakes as learning opportunities on the path to continuous improvement. During the Great Recession, when the company’s sales plummeted along with the nation's industrial production, he famously found a way to retain the company’s employees. The result: as soon as the economy came back to life, the company was way ahead of competitors in being able to ramp up to meet the new demand.
After a career in marketing and human resources starting first at Costco in marketing and then for other leading brands in human resources management as well, Salvagno launched a new career in public speaking and consulting, leading him to write the best-selling book Finding Purpose at Work. He has since founded PurposePoint, an organization dedicated to creating a community of expert solution providers for Purpose Leaders through its PurposePoint.com community, and a meeting place at the annual Purpose Summit April 29-May 1 for Purpose Leaders and executives and managers who work at these organizations to share how they are breaking down siloes to achieve a common purpose, goals, and objectives.
