The Essential Guide to Stakeholder Management Implementation

ESM IntroductionAs part of the Enterprise Engagement Alliance’s commitment to an open-source approach to information sharing on the implementation steps for stakeholder management, this begins an ongoing series featuring specific chapters in the EEA’s two books, Enterprise Engagement: The Roadmap 5th edition, by Bruce Bolger, Allan Schweyer, and Richard Kern, and Enterprise Engagement for CEOs, by Bruce Bolger.

Enterprise Engagement: The Roadmap is the guidebook for any organization seeking to implement the “Social” of Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) management, increasingly known as Stakeholder Capitalism. It is designed for any management in charge of making the shift toward a stakeholder approach to management and value creation.

The book is included with the EEA PurposePoint Academy membership library or can be purchased online.

The ISO 10018 People Engagement standards create a useful framework for the implementation of all the people aspects of Stakeholder Capitalism because they address the interests of all stakeholders. They elaborate on the new people management standards added for the first time to ISO 9001:2015, based on the determination by the Technical Committee that human resources management is critical to sustainable success. ISO 10018 standards are designed for ISO 9001 organizations that wish to better implement people management processes and for service, not-for-profit and government organizations.

We feature these standards not only because they largely mirror the implementation process developed by the Enterprise Engagement Alliance in 2009, but because they were created by the organization largely credited with having helped transform quality manufacturing in the US in the 1990s.

These standards are based on the premise that “the overall performance of a quality management system and its processes ultimately depends on the involvement of competent people and whether they are properly introduced and integrated into the organization,” according to a summary of the standards published by ISO. “The involvement of people is important for an organization’s quality management system to achieve outcomes which are consistent and aligned with their strategies and values. It is critical to identify, develop and evaluate the knowledge, skills, behavior and work environment required for the involvement of people with the necessary competence.”

This international standard provides guidelines for human factors that influence people involvement and competence and creates value that helps to achieve the organization’s objectives.

KEY PRINCIPLES OF QUALITY PEOPLE MANAGEMENT
The underlying distinguishing factor of ISO 10018:2012 is the attempt to bring a process approach to Quality People Management. The standards are based on the following Quality Management principles1 created by ISO Technical Committee 176:

1. Customer focus to align activities and priorities in service to the consumers of an organization’s services or products.
