The Conference Board Stakeholder Capitalism Webinar: Definitions, Game Plan Needed

According to the Conference Board, 90% of C-suite executives say the shift to Stakeholder Capitalism is underway – and 80% say it is happening at their company, and yet this webinar indicates that there is still no agreement on a definition or implementation game plan.

Even though a recent Conference Board survey found that most executives believe in the emergence of Stakeholder Capitalism, this recent webinar indicates that there is still no clear agreement on its definition or implementation process.

Moderated by the Conference Board’s Paul Washington, Executive Director, ESG Center, the panelists were Jennifer Kim Field, Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility, Henry Schein, Inc. and Peter Reali, Managing Director, Head of Stewardship, Responsible Investing, Nuveen, a TIAA company, could not concretely define the term nor recommend a specific implementation plan.

While Field admits that Henry Schein does not yet have a formal strategy for implementing Stakeholder Capitalism principles, she suggests that management start with what they are already doing. Most executives at the company may not have heard of Stakeholder Capitalism, she says, but many already are addressing various related issues in their current business plans.

Similarly, Reali of Nuveen admits that the company is still finding its way in terms of identifying clear and comparable metrics for evaluating the ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) practices of the companies it follows in its investment portfolios but believes the issue will not go away.

To help clear up the confusion surrounding definitions and implementation strategies, the EEA is holding the “Definitive Webinar on Stakeholder Capitalism” on March 1 at 12 noon ET, co-hosted by Edward Freeman, author of “Strategic Management, A Stakeholder Approach,” published in 1984, considered the original treatise on the movement. He is a professor at the Darden School at the University of Virginia.
